The EU Settlement Scheme was put in place to safeguard the rights of residence of EU nationals and their family members in the UK. The scheme allows EU nationals and their family members to apply for ‘settled’ or pre-settled status to be allowed to remain in the UK beyond the end of the transition period ending on 31 December 2020.
DEADLINE TO MAKE AN APPLICATION UNDER THE EU SETTLEMENT SCHEME
The deadline for EU nationals and most of their family members to make an application under the scheme is 30 June 2021. However, EU nationals intending to apply under the scheme must be residents in the UK by 31 December 2020, therefore applicants should make the move as soon as possible to avoid losing the right to apply under this scheme.
There are separate deadlines for non-EU family members living overseas.
EU nationals and their family members who are not residents in the UK before 1 January 2021 will need to apply for a visa and meet the requirements of the new immigration system which is due to commence on 1st January 2021. This will involve higher fees and a far more complex application.
